Car Seat Safety – Anchor Limits

I was recently talking with another MOPS mom about car seats & the LATCH system anchors most of us probably use with our kids car seats.  She’d mentioned the anchors had a weight limit & I have to admit the thought hadn’t even crossed my mind!  So I went on a search for my own vehicle’s weight restrictions & found it incredibly DIFFICULT to locate!  I’m happy to report that upon searching for a long time, I stumbled upon a website that provided nearly EVERY vehicle’s weight limit restrictions and the weight of a lot of popular car seat model’s weight (as you need to consider the weight of your child’s seat in addition to your child’s weight) to know the limit.  The new limits were restructured in January of 2013.  So, here you go (scroll way down to see the car seat weights):

Remember, when the limit given by the child restraint differs from that given by the vehicle manufacturer, you must abide by the lower limit.

Lower Anchor Weight Limits:

Weight limit of 65 lbs. including the weight of the CHILD RESTRAINT PLUS CHILD (calculate child weight limit by subtracting child restraint weight from 65):
Acura
Audi
Bentley
BMW
Buick
Cadillac
Chevrolet
Chrysler
Daewoo
Dodge
Fiat
Ford-Model Year 2014 and newer ONLY
Geo
GMC
Honda
Hummer
Jeep/Eagle
Lincoln-Model Year 2014 and newer ONLY
Mercedez-Benz
MINI
Mitsubishi
Oldsmobile
Pontiac
Porsche
Ram
Rolls-Royce
Saturn
smart
Subaru (ONLY if using top tether forward facing or if rear-facing; if using lower anchors forward-facing without top tether, 48 minus the weight of the child restraint)
Volkswagen

Vehicle Manufacturer Defers to the Child Restraint Manufacturer- Follow Instructions Provided with Child Restraint*:
Coda
Ferrari
Hyundai
Infiniti
Jaguar
Kia
Land Rover
Lexus
Maserati
Nissan
Scion
Toyota
Volvo

48 lbs., Weight of Child ONLY:
Ford- Model Year 2013 and before ONLY
Lincoln-Modely Year 2013 and before ONLY
Mercury
Saab

No Limit Stated**:
Isuzu
Mazda
Suzuki
Tesla

*When the vehicle manufacturer defers to the child restraint manufacturer and the child restraint manufacturer does not give a limit, I was taught to assume 40 lbs. (weight of child only.) I’m checking to see if this advice still applies or not. So far my responses seem to be a rather nebulous “yes.”

**Similarly, when the vehicle manufacturer does not set a limit I was taught to assume a 40 lbs. child weight limit. I am, similarly, checking to see whether this still applies. Again, so far a nebulous “yes.”

Car Seat Weights

*Dorel manufactures child restraints under the Cosco, Safety 1st, Eddie Bauer, Maxi-Cosi, Alpha Elite, Disney, and other brand names. If you don’t see your child restraint listed under one of those brand names, it’s under Dorel. Go by the model name, they’re the same across different brands owned by Dorel.

First weight is weight limit of the child restraint (weight in parenthesis is weight limit of child who may use lower anchors with this child restraint in vehicles specifying a 65 lbs. combined limit.)This is just the math. If the weight listed is higher than that allowed by the child restraint, go by the child restraint. When two weight limits conflict you use the lower weight.

Your Best “Mom” Tips & Tricks: Share for a gift card!

What’s your best Mom tips, tricks, or advice?  We’ve got mom’s with kids of all ages, so share your favorite tip.  All the answers given (which must appear below in the form section of this post) will be entered into a drawing for a gift card which will be presented to the winner at our next MOPS meeting (Nov 21st).  All the tips & tricks will be compiled & posted to share with the entire group.

Here’s an example, my favorite app to keep track of everything “kid” related is Baby Connect.  It allows you to track their height, weight, last feeding, sleep, medications, temperature, teeth, milestones, ANYTHING and EVERYTHING kid related…all from your smart phone or computer.  Nursing?  It allows you to put in feedings (even keeps track of which side you last nursed on).  Here’s a few screen shots (you can even have multiple kids in the one app!):

So what’s your best advice, tip, trick, suggestion for our moms?  Comment here:

November’s MNO: Turkey Trot

Monica mentioned this morning that November’s MNO is more like a Family Day Out! It’s a great way to kick off Thanksgiving Day (and it seriously lightens the guilt of the glutony to follow!).

If you’ve not attended the Issaquah Turkey Trot before, it is not timed, it is not competitive, and you can walk or run the 5K (3.1 miles). It is FAMILY FRIENDLY, in fact, kids are encouraged to participate in the “Wobbler Gobbler” which is a punch card (which is $7 to register for). Kids that get all the punches along the way get a prize at the end of the Turket Trot! To register for adults it is $25 & if you register before November 10th, you are guaranteed a t-shirt.  To register for the Turkey Trot, CLICK HERE.  The Trot begins at 9am for runners.  And check the calendar tab to RSVP on the evite so Monica knows to look/wait for you on Thanksgiving morning!

We have a BABY!!

Congratulations goes out to Alyson Francis who successfully delivered baby Andrew Charles Francis this morning!  She was scheduled to have a c-section on the 11th, but was able to pull out a miraculous VBAC this morning.  Congrats to Alyson & her family…we’ll miss her at MOPS this Thursday!  He was 8lbs 9 oz and 22 inches long.

Halloween Costume Swap

Screen Shot 2013-09-18 at 8.17.19 AM
Before you toss out that “old” costume or head to the store to buy a new one, plan to participate in National Costume Swap Day with Macaroni Kid on Saturday, October 12, 2013 from 8:00am-10:00am.

We’ve come to the conclusion that National Costume Swap Day is about showing our children a better way to celebrate!  Because something as simple as a costume swap does make a difference.  “Swapping the costumes of only half of the children who celebrate Halloween would reduce annual landfill waste by 6,250 tons!”

Admittedly, swapping costumes is a shift in the way kids think; it has become the norm to decide what you “want to be” and then head to the nearest box store and buy a new costume.  A swap offers children the chance to make a costume decision with an open-mind and possibilities laid out before them!  Dare I say it may even be reminiscent of those times you raided your parent’s closet to put together a costume … you know, back in the day!

Here’s the bottom line: Halloween has become a holiday filled with traditions that are unhealthy for our children and our planet. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to serve as role models.  Participating in a costume swap not only encourages celebrating in a way that is healthier and more earth-conscience, but it also empowers our children to think about how small changes can have a big impact.  All while still having fun!

A costume swap is recycling at its most fun. Kids get new-to-them costumes, and parents get to save money and the planet.  National Costume Swap Day is the brainchild of Corey and Lynn, moms living right here in Issaquah, and founders of a grassroots, non-profit known as Green Halloween®. For the past three years Macaroni Kid has partnered with Small ThreadsAdventure Kids, and CleanScapes to bring this event to our community with DROP-SWAP-SHOP, and we can’t wait to do it again this year!
Here’s how …

Anytime between now and October 11th, participants are encouraged to drop off swap-able costumes during business hours at one of these locations:

In exchange for costume(s) you will be given a Swap Ticket to be brought back for the event on October 12th from 8:00 am to 10:00 am at Small Threads for Kids.

If you’re a little reluctant to give swapping a try, local businesses are providing great incentives. In addition to swapping, you can also shop with 20% discount off purchases at Small Threads and get a discount at Adventure Kids Playcare.  To make sure you get to the swap on time, AKP is opening early at 7:00 am.  If you’re new to AKP, be sure you’ve filled out 1st Visit Forms.  Both offers are only valid during the event on October 12th.

If you are a community business interested in participating as a sponsor (including our Swag Bag program), please contact Danaatdanav@macaronikid.com.

Do you know about MQP’s TOTS?

Did you know on Monday’s from 9:30-11:30am that MQP has a group just for your preschool & babies?  A group of mom’s meet every Monday (usually in the nursery during the winter months and at parks on nice days) from 9:30-11:30am.  Come at the beginning, middle, or end to play & relax.  There’s nothing structured about the group, it’s just another group at MQP you can participate in.

If you’d like to formally be on the email list to find out where the group will meet (as they do meet at parks on sunny, warm days!), email Christie at christie.malchow@gmail.com to be added to the list.
